Multiple Affect Adjective Check List (MAACL)

The Multiple Affect Adjective Checklist-Revised (MAACL-R; Zuckerman and Lubin 1985; Lubin and Zuckerman 1999) consists of 132-adjectives within a self-report paper and pencil questionnaire to assess affect amongst five dimensions. Participants check off adjectives that describe their affect both in a state and trait response. The MAACL-R has two forms to evaluate state and trait affect within individuals aged from high school through adult.

Introduction

In order to better assess affect, Zuckerman and Lubin (1965) developed the MAACL with the goal of identifying affect by evaluating an individual’s anxiety, depression, and hostility through various adjectives. As interest in affect increased, the MAACL offered a new perspective as it asked participates to determine whether they experienced the adjectives “today” and whether the adjectives were representative of how the individuals “generally [felt]” (Zuckerman et al. 1965).
